In 1880, reknowned American poultry expert, Frederick H. Ayres, made a voyage to Italy for the express purpose of securing Leghorn Fowls and acquiring accurate knowledge of the breed in their native territory. This was probably the first voyage of considerable length ever made for the sole purpose of importing chickens. Mr. Ayres did not set out in "the Quest For The Leghorn" as a pleasure trip or for any other business. His sole purpose was to find the Leghorn breed in its home region and in its prosecution, he sailed over twelve thousand miles. This trip over the sea would have taken him over 100 days!
