Fleeing conscription into Napoleon's army Kuhlau landed in Copenhagen with a stack of manuscripts under his arm. Riding on the popularity of his piano concerto this sonata was one of the first of his works to be published but it already shows a glimmering of the Romantic genius in his stride.
