Overview
In the decades since 9/11, American counterterrorism has undergone a fundamental transformation from global war to homeland security. This book reveals how popular culture has been a crucial site where this strategic shift was first imagined and negotiated.Through analysis of contemporary cultural texts, the work identifies three key dimensions of this new paradigm: The Internalization of Threat - Cultural narratives increasingly locate terrorism within domestic spaces, featuring the "enemy within" rather than foreign infiltrators. The Democratization of Heroism - The professional agent archetype gives way to ordinary heroes: political leaders, citizens, and even children using technology to combat threats. The Ethical Reckoning - These cultural works grapple with profound questions about civil liberties, surveillance, and the moral costs of security. This book demonstrates how culture actively shapes security policy rather than merely reflecting it. The homeland security paradigm represents a comprehensive reimagining of security, citizenship, and national identity in contemporary America.
