Overview
A taut, living record of a city and a nation in flux. December 1668 opens a window into Restoration London through the intimate and unflinching voice of Samuel Pepys, preserving private diary records that feel both personal and universally legible. This is more than a diary; it is a historical diary collection that blends daily entries and reflections with sharp observations of naval life, courtly bustle, and a city rebuilding after fire and war. Pepys's notes offer fresh light on the England of the 1660s, presenting the era's social rituals, political toils, and weathered sensibilities as though standing at the doorstep of a bustling office, a coffeehouse, and a ship's deck. For scholars, it forms a scholarly history archive-an enduring historical evidence source for researchers seeking the rhythms of restoration era London and the broader early modern milieu. For readers, it remains a vivid, readable window into the private mind behind public events-the kind of diary that travellers to other restoration period journals will recognise as essential. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, this edition is restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint-it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure, crafted to honour Pepys's honest, often candid voice while inviting new generations to explore the discipline, wit, and daily life that shaped an era. Ideal for casual readers and classic-literature collectors alike.
