Overview
The Story of Vincenzo Romano: A Life of Humble Sanctity in Revolutionary Times (1751-1831)A meticulously researched account of an extraordinary parish priest who transformed an Italian coastal town through fifty-six years of unwavering service. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1794, it buried Torre del Greco under volcanic ash. While others fled, Father Vincenzo Romano stayed. For sixteen years, this remarkable priest carried stones, mixed mortar, and worked alongside masons to rebuild Santa Croce church. By day he constructed walls; by night he tended souls.Born in 1751 to a shipbuilder's family, Romano rose to guide his community through catastrophic natural disaster, political revolution, and Napoleonic occupation. His innovative approaches to education, poverty relief, and community development created lasting institutions that continued long after his death in 1831.This authoritative biography traces Romano's path from humble beginnings to his canonization by Pope Francis in 2018. Drawing on extensive primary sources-parish records, eyewitness accounts, and Vatican documents-the author presents a compelling portrait of a man who lived Catholic faith through practical action. What makes this account unique is Romano's status as a "worker priest" who physically labored to rebuild his church, developing a profound theology of work centuries ahead of his time. For Catholics seeking an accessible model of holiness or historians interested in church life during revolutionary Europe, this carefully documented narrative brings to life a saint who proves that extraordinary sanctity can exist in ordinary circumstances.
