Overview
Lady Prudence, the daughter of Earl Stockley, has recently come out into society but is pressured to marry Mr Ballantyne who is the holder of the entail of the estate in case her brother, Marmaduke, is killed fighting Napoleon Bonaparte. She meets Sir Jasper Blake, her brother's friend, but hates him and they annoy each other, but gradually they find they are excited by each other's company and they kiss. Prudence has secret fantasies about Sir Jasper and wants him to discipline her, but he is called away to France and is captured as a spy and faces execution. Marmaduke goes to the Peninsular war and becomes missing. Will Prudence be forced to marry Mr Ballantyne, or will she see again Sir Jasper who can give her the pleasure she craves?
