Overview
Alfonso Abril believes that two ideas contend in the West: freedom and equality. The triumph of freedom is the defeat of equality. Conversely, the triumph of equality is the defeat of freedom. In the United States, the hope of freedom is weakened as the new generations do not give freedom, nor the founding fathers, the value they deserve, showing that the spirit of the age is changing. Rousseau's social contract has had a vast influence on political systems and that implies assuming that a convention is the origin of rights and powers. This foundation of the social order is incompatible with a right that is prior to any convention: the right to liberty. In an ideal of freedom, the powers should be organized exclusively to defend that right. Reading Alfonso Abril's book is similar to taking a rewarding intellectual walk.
