Overview

The Ancestral Rocky Mountains of Wyoming is a complex configuration of northwesterly trending uplifts occurring in the same region as the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide uplifts in the central Rocky Mountains, but oriented differently. The Ancestral Front Range extended into south central Wyoming at the site of the Sierra Madre. The Pathfinder Uplift occurred northeast of the Front Range but was a minor lowland by comparison, and it was the northwestern terminus of the Ancestral Rockies highlands.Chapter 1 introduces the geologic setting of the Ancestral Rockies. Chapter 2 briefly presents the Pathfinder Uplift. Chapter 3 discusses the Pennsylvanian and associated rocks in Wyoming, describing the Amsden Formation members, Casper, Fountain, Minnelusa-Hartville, Morgan, and Weber formations. The Tensleep Sandstone and Quadrant Quartzite closes out the discussion. Chapter 4 presents rocks of the various Pennsylvanian epochs pertaining to the Desmoinesian, Missourian, and Virgilian epochs. The book ends with Chapter 5 and the sand sources associated with the upper boundary of the Pennsylvanian System.
