Overview
It was in 1933 that Charles Urschel, an Oklahoma City multimillionaire oilman, was kidnapped. The manhunt for the kidnappers became fodder for newspapers nationwide. During that era, newspapers were the primary source of news, as few people had radios and there was no television to provide instant analysis of the search for the culprits. For ninety days relentless newsmen stayed on top of the biggest crime story and manhunt in the nation's history. The resulting trials for all those involved were conducted in a quick and circus-like atmosphere. Newsreel cameras rolled and photographers' flash bulbs lit up the courtroom, all with the blessing of the presiding judge, Edgar S. Vaught. Much has been written and rewritten about the life of the Kellys that climaxed with their overnight conviction for the Charles Urschel kidnapping occurring in Oklahoma City. Newspapers, books, pulp-crime magazines, B-movies, and more recent internet tales, are all laced with both fact and fiction about George and Kathryn Kelly. This book provides the true story of Kathryn Kelly. It includes only that portion of the old material checked and rechecked for accuracy. Included are many additional facts discovered from research that are not in any other writings about Kathryn Kelly.
