Overview
On the onset of the Black Death in England, 16 year-old Estrid of the House of Aimar is in a difficult situation. Facing her father's sudden death, she and her household flee Canterbury from a ruthless lord she got betrothed to. As they are sailing away from England, Estrid learns she's expecting. Months later, she gives birth to a baby girl whom she names Sybil in the foreign kingdom of Ingólfur. Fourteen years later, Estrid and Sybil return to Canterbury and start their new life. Sybil eventually meets Adelarde of Brentwood, a knight who happens to be Philip of Brentwood's son, the brother of Estrid's former betrothed, Harold. Sybil and Estrid settle into Estrid's former manor that has been unoccupied for years, but neither of them know that Philip had occupied it years after Estrid left. When Philip discovers that they are living in the manor, he arrests Estrid. Sybil and Adelarde fall for each other, but then he is asked to fight in the Battle of Auray, and Sybil is left to handle the situation with Lord Philip. Sybil realizes she is left to choose one of the battles she's been confronted with: tending her injured lover at Auray or driving out the imposter who squatted her family's manor years before?
