Overview
When 14-year-old Bretta Deevers is found dead in the city park, the small town of Seely, Arkansas, is left in a state of shock and fear. Her friend, Rachel McNeely, knows more than she's telling, but there's a reason Rachel is staying silent. As best friends, the girls share everything-classes, clothes, shoes-and secrets. One evening, Bretta tells Rachel of her plan to meet with a new friend she's met online. IB is her dream friend-rich, from the West Coast, interested in art, like herself, and generous. She's given Bretta a new phone for their special communications-a secret phone that no one else knows about. Now, Rachel knows of Bretta's plan to meet IB in the park, but she doesn't tell anyone. Because of that, Bretta has been murdered, and Rachel feels responsible. It's time to make up for her mistake. The only way to do that is to catch Bretta's killer. The police have written it off as a random act of violence. But it wasn't random, and Rachel is going to prove it. However, the killer has a different idea-target Rachel as the next victim.
