Francis lives in the same house he was born in, with his obese sister Candida, and their father who remains catatonic in a permanent vegetative state, the result of a car accident. Driven by his family's condition, Francis' life is exhausted by alcoholism and his obsession with Mary, a married woman, and his desire to euthanize his father. In a haze of cigarette smoke, unforgiving commentary and a perpetual moral dilemma, Francis first needs to convince his best friend, Father Jonathan, a Catholic priest, that his vision for the future of the lives around him, is the right one, and that the consequences of his solution are just.
