Rivers of Power : Creek Political Culture in the Native South, 1750-1815

Shows that Creek headmen came from matrilineal clans and small towns that counted on experienced leaders to address the dangers in the Native South from the mid-eighteenth century to the Redstick War. Headmen mitigated those dangers by forming coalitions within and across the provinces and communities. This created a riverine form of leadership which inspired coalition-building and guaranteed community influence in Creek affairs--
