Carlo Bodoni leaves his rural home outside Cremona, Italy in 1905 at the age of 14 with only his violin, for a life as a mariner with his favourite uncle. When tragedy strikes, he follows his parents' directives and joins his brother Beppe, living in Melbourne, Australia. The brothers set up their own business in Geelong, but their conflicting personalities make it a difficult co-existence. Fate lands him in Adelaide where a chance encounter delivers him into the hands of beautiful pianist, Luisa. Launching his own ice-cream business and making plans for a wedding, Carlo finally feels his life is truly beginning. However, the spectre of World War One, the economic turmoil which follows and then the threat of another war, along with the highs and lows of family and business life, turn Carlo into an enterprising, compassionate and resilient man. There is one final threat which might be his undoing though. In 1941, Italy enters the war against the Allies. All Italians living in Australia are now classed as Enemy Aliens and Carlo is being chased by the police, labelled as the state's No.1 Fascist. This is a deep, family-saga. A story of hope, despair and above all, perseverance which celebrates the Italian pioneers who came to South Australia in the first one hundred years of settlement.
