Southern Pacific Railroad founded Benson, Arizona, in 1880 as the railroad built a line from California to Texas to complete the Second Transcontinental Railroad. Southern Pacific chose the site for Benson in the San Pedro Valley to serve the needs of the mining and cattle operations in the valley. The first four chapters of the book describe the desert setting, how the town was named, Benson's importance in the San Pedro Valley, and the wild behavior in its earliest years. Chapters five through twelve follow the growth of Benson by decade from the 1880s through 1945. The book includes 80 photographs and illustrations.
