An action thriller based on a CIA agent's life experiences. Although Mick McReady is a fictional character, the story is mostly based on actual experiences. The story begins in Cleveland with some family history including a nasty stepfather who is constantly berating him and his mother. The year is 1951. Mick goes completely out of control as a teenager, leaves home and becomes a petty thief at the age of 13. He manages to survive by living in a strangely remote and wild enclave near the last railroad train stop before the main station in Cleveland. Mick makes friends with some of the boys living in a nearby village that also permits the mob to operate illegal gambling within its boundaries. The boys do not know about his hidden life and accept him into their group. They introduce him to sports, fast cars and girls. He gravitates to the last two. One of his village buddies introduces him to auto mechanics and racing. Another buddy introduces him to girls. He even makes a connection with a mob boss who helps him end his career as a petty thief. At age 16, Mick loads as many of his worldly possessions as he can fit into his '51 Ford and a single axle trailer and heads west to San Francisco. Determining that San Francisco is too expensive, he contacts a mob connection who steers him to a good deal in Oakland. He rents a garage with living quarters and starts a hot rod shop. Mick, however, has a problem with racing and speed in general. He loves drag racing and gets a thrill being involved in high-speed police chases. At this point in his life, Mick hasn't finished high school and he is definitely headed down the wrong path. But somehow, he winds up working for the CIA at Area 51, plays an important role in the 1969 lunar landing, and gives a briefing to President Reagan that helps bring about an end to the Cold War. After the presidential briefing, things become a little dicey fie Mick when the Soviets try to kidnap him. It takes all of his accumulated street skills, but he does survive. Is it too good to be true? You'll just have to read the book and decide for yourself.
