Patsy Cline, born Virginia Patterson Hensley, on September 8th, 1932, Winchester Memorial Hospital, Winchester, Virginia, U.S., was a singer-songwriter, regarded as one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century, being one of the first country music artists to successfully cross over into pop music. Patsy had several big hits during her 8-year recording career, including a couple of Billboard Hot Country and Western Sides chart-toppers. Her 1st professional performances at the age of 15, were at the local WINC radio station. Cline began appearing in a local band during the early '50s, led by Bill Peer, which featured on Connie B. Gay's Town and Country TV broadcasts, followed by the signing of her first recording contract with the Four Star label in 1954. She had minor success with her earliest Four Star singles including 'A Church, A Courtroom and Goodbye' (1955) then 'I've Loved and Lost Again' (1956). Patsy made her 1st appearance on national TV on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts the following year, singing Walkin' After Midnight, which became her first big hit on both the country and pop charts. Cline's following singles with Four Star Records weren't successful, but she continued performing and recording. After marrying during 1957 then giving birth the following year, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to further her career. Working with new manager Randy Hughes, Patsy became a member of the Grand Ole Opry then signed with Decca Records in 1960, her musical sound changing under the direction of producer Owen Bradley, as she had consistent success. The single I Fall to Pieces (1961) became her first to top the Billboard country chart, as Cline was severely injured in a car accident, spending a month in hospital. After recovering, her next single 'Crazy' became a big hit. Patsy had hits with She's Got You, When I Get Through with You, So Wrong and Leavin' on Your Mind from 1962 and 1963, while touring and headlining shows more frequently. She appeared at a benefit show in Kansas City during March 1963 then boarded a plane to fly home, along with country performers Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins and her manager Randy Hughes. When running into bad weather, the plane crashed approaching Camden, Tennessee, killing all those on board.
