The Sound of the Other Hand Clapping To say that Dr. Tom Woodruff is an enigmatic character is somewhat of an understatement. A man of many talents and considerable intellect, he possesses another most unique ability. His ability to meet, and live with, the unconscious psyche requires Tom to have a firm hold on daily reality and a solid consciousness. We clearly are open to the unconscious during sleep but not through a will of our own. The unconscious psyche fills us with dream images and meanings that are symbolically expressed. Most people, during their waking states, are not open to the unconscious. Tom is the exception. He is as comfortable with the strangeness of the unconscious psyche as he is breathing the air that surrounds him. Tom lives two sides of reality in many ways. His sophisticated intellectual, professorial life contrasts with his so-called peasant side. His ease with both sides reflects his ease with the conscious and unconscious psyche. Balancing the dualities often introduces tensions, but not for Tom, who seems to have been born with an understanding of how order originates from chaos. It's quite a trick!
