Take them out much, DAD!! That is what a woman yelled out to me in front of Harris Teeter. The story: while strapping my one-year-old into his seat, my three-year-old daughter wandered to the other side of the van near the road (after I asked her to stay on the sidewalk). As soon as I realized she was gone, I picked her up and brought her to the sidewalk. In total, the whole episode took about 5 seconds, and I was grateful that the folks driving in the parking lot were cautious. After I got all three kids in the car, I noticed a woman sneering at me as she traversed the crosswalk from Harris Teeter to her car in the parking lot. I asked her, "Are you sneering at me?" She said, "Yes! Your daughter was in the road! Take them out much, DAD!! " I was surprised. I thought I would get some empathy from a grandma (the woman who yelled at me was grandma age). Nope. It seemed like she was insinuating that because I was a Dad, clearly I have no idea what I'm doing and that I don't spend any time with my children (because when it comes to children, men are all dumb, incompetent, and don't know how to manage). My purpose in writing this book is NOT to insinuate that you are incompetent. I am not judging you, or saying that you are doing a horrible job. My purpose is to tell you some of the insights I've gained as I've grown into fatherhood. My mistakes, what I've learned, and how I've grown on my journey to understanding what it is to be a dad. Enjoy!
