This story takes place in south-east Spain and England. George, an English man with an interest in nature, decides to reclaim dry land for his feathered friends on a visit to Spain. It tells how he goes about it, and his making Spanish friends, learning the language, and culture. He meets Carmen (Lily of the Valley), falls in love, in their joint 'greening', and their love and lovemaking develops at a pace.
