Set primarily in a remote village called Inverdaig on the coast of Scotland, Tales of Johan spans the events of a hundred years. It is ostensibly concerned with Iain Broderick's quest to piece together and understand the life choices made by his parents - a father he never knew, killed in the war, and a mother bound in a loveless relationship. The difficulty in this task lies in the fact that almost all that Iain learns, particularly of his father, is at a remove. He must listen to, and interpret, the version of reality offered by the stories of Johan - an elder member of the community; an incomer who was never fully accepted by the other villagers. The oral tradition therefore is central to this novel, and is put forward as life-blood of a community, as it attempts to learn from its past and embrace an uncertain future.
