The Ukraine is but one of fifteen provinces in the Soviet Union, however it is the undisputed bread basket with thick, loamy soil producing great numbers of crops per acre. Under Soviet totalitarian rules, since 1917 there is no private ownership of agricultural lands. Following the Second World War, the entire population was uprooted to Siberia en masse, from which escape was almost impossible. This novel describes an alternative.
