Harold Lee Washington (1922-1987) was born in Chicago, Illinois to Roy L. and Arlene Jackson Washington. He was the descendant of African- American slaves. Harold's earliest known ancestor was Isham Washington (1832-1903), a former slave who joined the 8th Colored Heavy Artillery during the Civil War and later became a prosperous farmer in Illinois. Harold served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and later entered politics as a Democrat. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1976 to 1980 and in the United States Congress from 1980 to 1983. In 1983 Harold was elected as the first African-American mayor of Chicago. He died of a heart attack in 1987 while at work in the mayor's office.
