New Frontiers, Inc, is leading the drive to conquer space. Regular traffic to space, even to NFI's base on the moon, is soon a relatively ordinary occurrence. The company is even prepared to cooperate with friends. Want your own moonbase? NFI will provide transportation. At a profit, of course. Some of those national bases are neutral; none are really friends. NFI controls space, but that doesn't mean that Earth's nations like it. Or, for that matter, are willing to allow it to continue. But NFI, as they soon learn, is quite able to protect itself. And is not at all hesitant to do so! Overcoming opposition from powerful and jealous nations is only the beginning. NFI's ships soon reach the Asteroid belt, where they find something utterly unexpected: a remnant of an ancient civilization. And they soon discover others. The first was wrecked; the rest are perfectly functional. Who are they, the extra-terrestrials who left those mysterious beacons? The beacons themselves must have a purpose, but what could it be?
