A Brief Atlas of My Inner World

How does what we are going through color our experience of a place? How do our surroundings affect our perspective? Even when we are present, we are never only just where we are. We view the world through our years of compounded experiences and emotions, and more often than not, our present state of mind skews our interaction with the circumstances around us. Inner narratives tangle with the essence and minutia of places as we travel, and we feel them as we are, not necessarily as they are. Here, the relationship between location and experience is explored tacitly. The author chronicles her inner dialogue in introspective poetry, metaphoric prose, and tales of her adventures over the course of a year as she travels in an effort to heal from depression and create a deliberate life. The landscape within will always overlay the backdrop on which we find ourselves- we can never return to the same place twice. Our emotional experience overprints our every interaction, filtering it with our beautifully imperfect subjectivity. Sometimes the gap between our mood and the reality of a place is perceptible. Mapping these paradoxes, a temporal atlas is born: a journal of places seen through the lens of our internalities in moments that cannot be repeated. As travelers, we move through life capturing time and space in discrete snapshots and filing them away according to how we felt when we were then and there. Understanding "where we've been" requires learning to decipher the complex interplay of our inner and outer domains that are in constant flux... and that can only be recorded as accurately as we can see our position from within them.
