I turned away from the shore, walking over some hillocks of sand tufted with long grass, until I came to a little hut as bare as an empty barracks. I entered it and made my way into a tiny lavatory with a porcelain sink and shaving mirror on the wall. Holding onto the sink with both hands and resting my weight, stiff-armed, on its edge, I raised my head slowly until I was looking straight in the mirror. The face that looked back at me wasn't my face, or at least not my present face. It was the face pictured in the book I had left opened on the nightstand beside my bed... It's been said that a man is not actually born when he comes out of the female body, since he doesn't yet know that he is born. He is actually born when he gets the knowledge of his birth. So it is when a revelation of great magnitude bursts upon a person's consciousness with the power to change their trajectory in life. Anything that fundamentally alters the way we regard ourselves or the world around us is a birth or rebirth of some type. The Finest Story in the World centers on just such a revelation-a past life experience that shatters Kip Morgan's sense of identity and leads him down a path of determined self-inquiry. If we accept that life is a continuation, that nothing springs from a vacuum, and that the present develops inexorably from the past, then there are no experiences or events that are without their cause or origin. Therefore, any experience that is mysterious or unfathomable must necessarily bear with it the promise of bringing us closer to grasping the elusive nature of reality and our purpose in life. However real or imagined, Kip's story begs to be taken at face value. While his narrative doesn't seek to convince, it does ask to be taken seriously. Any experience so central to a person's being as to become a lifelong preoccupation cannot be dismissed out of hand as a chimera or a fraud. We must remember that each experience is unique to the individual and can be judged on no other basis unless contradicted by actual fact.
