Midnight: 3 people are murdered at the building where detective Ray Jansen and his secretary, Lexi Taylor, work. A janitor there, Mike Bell, hears the gunshots and runs from the building in terror. Hoping that the darkness of the wooded area behind the parking lot will hide him he slips and slides through the heavy rain till he falls into a water-filled ditch. Scared to death, he waits. . .It seems like an eternity till someone pulls him to safety. At he hospital he can;t move or talk. Why? A neurologist diagnoses conversion disorder, a condition named by Freud who explained that when a person is traumatized so severely that we say that he was "scared to death," instead of dying, the person may develop physical symptoms such as paralysis or mutism.While the medical staff is doing its best to cure Mike Bell; Ray is doing his best to find the murderer. There are no witnesses, no fingerprints, no DNA, only one clue: a packet of cocaine. Is this a drug deal gone wrong as the police think? As Mike recovers he remembers a couple dressed like people from the "roaring twenties." Are they connected to the crime?As all this is going on Lexi is feeling sad because it is her dead fiance's birthday and Ray questions her love for him. Lexi flies home to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to think. Will they reconcile or go their own ways?
