During WWII, at the height of the bombing raids against Germany, young children found refuge on country farms. At war's end, they were picked up again and returned home, but a few remained, overlooked or forgotten. Emmi Elsner was such a child, but she was strong-willed and resolved to find her way back. She avoids people and open roads until she reaches Berlin where she finds death and destruction, but also friendship and unexpectedly, love.
