Dauntless (Gentlemen of the Order Book 1) by Adele Clee This is a tale of 4 noblemen who have united to provide assistance to those unable to afford to find other help. They solve murders, abductions, disappearances, black-mailings; and other such problems. They ask no payment for their services, and work only for the satisfaction of knowing they are helping their fellow man, or woman. This particular story involves an unmarried woman, whose brother has disappeared, after running up gambling debts, and stealing her mothers’ jewels. She is being blackmailed, and is trying to conceal her occupation as a popular novelist. Her boots and shoes have been stolen, and she has been attacked on the street at night. One of the four Gentlemen, nicknamed Dauntless, is assisting the woman. Together they investigate all her problems, and while doing so, fall in love. This is a well-written presentation of a number of interconnecting problems, with some elements leading to unusual solutions, and the unmasking of a surprising villain. I did enjoy the book.
