The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program: Blood Gas Interpretation Chart

Based on the original Siggaard-Andersen Acid-Base Alignment Nomogram, this handy chart helps you accurately interpret neonatal blood gas results. The chart is 8.5" x 11" inches and is laminated so that it can be easily cleaned if used at a patient's bedside. You'll find normal blood gas values for young infants listed on the front side of the chart. To interpret, align bicarbonate, pH, and PCO2 blood gas values with a ruler. Then, flip the card to follow the rules determining if the blood gas is normal, compensated, or uncompensated. If abnormal, decide if it indicates respiratory, metabolic, or both respiratory and metabolic issues. Accurate interpretation of abnormal blood gas allows you to proceed with the appropriate therapy confidently.
