We have had great success in assisting Western/Westernized students in learning traditional non-Western polyrhythms with our BeatBox notation. This book is a workbook consisting merely of blank Beat Sheets, with a fairly comprehensive key to the notation symbols in the margin, and a space for Notes on the top of each page. While many traditional teachers do not use notation, it is important to realize that they themselves learned in the context of a living oral tradition, and have developed a capacity for recollection that Westerners in a text-based cultural transmission usually do not possess. The practice of notating the rhythms and exercises you learn enhances our ability to remember these parts.
