This is the debut novel of a series about the author's alter-ego, an academic pathologist working at a prominent medical school in New York City. Milton Davidson, M.D., Ph.D., conducts cancer research, but because of an earlier involvement with olfaction during his graduate school education, he is recruited by the CIA to spy on bioweapons research involving odors, which can target the brain directly from the nose, by the Russian military. The CIA arranged for an agency of the National Institutes of Health to arrange for his medical school to give Milt a sabbatical leave to supposedly help the government in an international effort to study toxic odors in the environment. The medical school was honored to release him to join this prestigious effort. But in order to spy in Russia, he was provided a cover of developing a start-up biopharma company in Moscow to use odors to treat neurological diseases. The CIA and the Mossad assisted in his raising initial funding from a mostly European investor group, including a Russian oligarch tied to President Putin, and his training to spy. As a 42-year-old bachelor collaborating with the Israeli Mossad, the female spies he becomes entangled with threaten and complicate his clandestine life in Moscow, where he joined the Jewish Community Center having sympathizers to Israel. In a short six months in Moscow, we learn how Milt pursues the study of odors as a new class of pharmaceuticals, while his interests in cuisine, art, and music help capture him into proverbial 'honey traps' involving beautiful and mysterious Israeli and Russian women. Of course, his seductions were expressions of his patriotism to America. The science described is authentic, but the author speculates on new medical approaches for both the lay reader and scientist. Because the sense of smell is the least studied and understood of our five senses, this novel introduces a potentially new drug therapy involving smelling defined odors, as well as insight into an international competition on the use of scents in bioweaponry.
