Tocqueville's America

In May 1831, at the age of 25, Alexis de Tocqueville arrived in the United States as part of a commission of two to study the American prison system, returning to France nine months later to write up his report and start work on his famous Democracy in America (De la démocratie en Amérique, 1835, 1840).
