Monty ´s family Christmas Day is soon struck with disaster when the turkey explodes and his brand-new model railway stops working. Early that night he then shrinks to the size of a mouse before being chased down a mouse-hole by his own cat. There he meets a real mouse called Mortimer, who suggests that they use the "matchstick stairway" to get to the kitchen to raid the fridge for some cheese. Things soon start going wrong all over again, so that Monty finishes up in his playroom in the attic where all his toys have come alive - but are also having problems of their own. King Richard the Knight has lost his Magic Kingdom to the Queen of Clubs and her playing-cards, who are busy playing cricket with the jelly-monsters in the Games Box. Little do they know that this box is also a Box of Hocus Pocus and that someone has let the Four Big, Black Cowboys of Disaster out of it - with the last Disaster being the biggest of them all and which will effect everyone. It takes a red-haired Scottish mouse called Grandfather Bobby, a golden fairy, a toy helicopter and even a box of toy soldiers to all help try to save the Magic Kingdom and, piece by piece, unravel the mystery like a detective story. Joined by a host of other magical characters including Doobeedoo, Mr. Monopoly and Aunt Agnes, as well as the real-live Brilliant Detective, this is a charming, warm-hearted tale with endless surprises that will keep the children guessing right up to the end. 7 years up, fully-illustrated by the author himself.
