The federal government collects, maintains, and uses geospatialinformation-information linked tospecific geographic locations-tosupport many functions, includingnational security and disasterresponse. In 2012, the Department ofthe Interior (Interior) estimated that thefederal government invests billions ofdollars on geospatial data annually, and that duplication is common. GAOwas asked to determine the extent towhich the federal government hasestablished and effectivelyimplemented policies and proceduresfor coordinating its geospatialinvestments and avoiding duplication. To do so, GAO focused on FGDCcoordination activities; efforts within thedepartments of Commerce, theInterior, and Transportation; and OMBoversight. GAO reviewed FGDC anddepartment documentation, such aspolicies, procedures, and strategicplans; OMB guidance and an executiveorder; and reports concerningduplicative investments.
