Lump In His Throat

In the story, one Nazem Ali, a Behari Muslim of Aryan origin remembers his past in a village, Kakinpura in Bihar. He was doing this when he was the captive of a notorious gang. The gang kidnapped him for doing a job. In his childhood Nazem and his friends did not understand the difference between various religions. They participated in the religious festivals of all. His religious teacher was the first to teach him about the 'superiority' of their religion over all others. He would have believed that unless his father taught differently. This man was of the opinion that all men were equal. About religion he believed, either all religions were equally valid or equally invalid. And he knew a secret. His father had an old manuscript in which one of their ancestors wrote about alien's invasion and religious conversion. The description was something for which the descendants could feel pride. It only increased his anguish. Nazem inherited the same. His religious teacher was the first man to teach him that men belonging to their religion were superior to others. He noticed, his teacher was constantly trying to create disturbance, misunderstanding and riots among the followers of various religions. Nazem's father asked him whether he was doing it intentionally and the teacher replied, 'yes'. In reply the teacher explained, in case they do not keep up their fighting spirit, others were to defeat them. He mentioned that was the reason why the Muslim countries continue warfare among themselves.
