Tells the true story of Iris Winton Matthews, who was one of the first children to attend the newly integrated Sewanee Elementary School in Sewanee, Tennessee. As a child, she took refuge from her lively family in Thurmond Memorial Library, spending many hours reading in its quiteness. With the encouragement of her teachers and other local adults, she attended Martin Methodist College, later graduating from Middle Tennessee State University. She now works as a library youth services coordinator at DeKalb County Public Library in Decatur, Georgia.
