Thirty-three year old Winston Bedlow has always been happy to go where the wind blows him, but at his parents' house the wind has never blown very hard. He's been occupying the same bedroom for the entirety of his over-educated, under-utilized life. However, when his parents abruptly decide to downsize to a 55+ Senior Living condominium, Winston finds himself shouldering the full responsibilities of adulthood for the very first time. And--he's terrible at it.As frustrations pile on top of a physician's misapprehension, Winston ends up an unwitting participant in a new housing program. Instead of believing there has been a dreadful mistake, his family seems to take his new diagnosis in stride. The program even provides new 'friends' like Iris Naess. Sure, it's a little awkward to be on the government dole reserved for the mentally disabled, but when all of his problems seem to evaporate with the filling out of a few forms, maybe the label makes more sense than Winston would have thought. In Iris, Winston finds motivation for maturity that he's never had before. Unfortunately, neither "fraud", nor "mentally disabled" are likely to be high on any woman's list of qualifications for a potential romantic interest. But getting into the program is easier than getting out; and changing people's perceptions (especially his own) is the biggest hurdle of all to clear.
