Europeanization of Defence Industry Policy

Europeanization has become a frequently used word, both in the everyday debate about society and in social science literature. This book analyses the Europeanization of defence industry policy, with a special focus on the Swedish case. Drawing from European integration theory and new institutional organisation theory, this book analyses how domestic and European structures and actors change when defence industry policy is Europeanized. It analyses the creation of European rules for collaboration in defence equipment production, and the creation of European actors in form of European defence industry companies. It studies to what extent changes in the Swedish defence industry policy area from 1989 to 2001 were part of a process of Europeanization. A small comparison between develop-ments in Sweden and developments in France and the UK is also made to enable a discussion of what is unique in the Swedish development. The analysis should be useful for any student of Europeanization or European defence and security policy, as well as for professionals working with defence industry related issues.
