Characterization of Women in the Novels of Kamala Markandaya

Kamala Markandaya is unique both in respect for her sensitive handling of foreign medium and her authentic portrayal of the Indian scene. What distinguishes her most form other Indian novelists is her acute awareness of a gradual shift in values that has been taking place in this subcontinent during recent times.Each of her novels portrays this conflict in various facts such as tradition versus modernity, village versus town, faith versus reason, mysticism versus science and spiritualism versus materialism. Each directly or covertly suggests how the modernity set in by the Western Culture provokes the protagonists to revolt against the existing morbid conditions and seek their fulfillment in carving their course independently.
