Authoritarian tendencies have appeared in several long-standing democracies, but their main successes have taken place in states that emerged from dictatorial rule only recently. This book contains case studies of contemporary Hungarian, Kenyan, Polish, Russian, and Turkish regimes and what they portend for democratic politics. The third wave of democratization, unlike the first and the second, has not been followed by a reverse wave. However, in several countries, democratically elected leaders interpret democracy narrowly, as the rule of the majority only. Other conditions for democratic government, such as the rule of law and protecting human rights, are ignored. Such a system of government differs from the authoritarian model as defined by Juan J. Linz and can best be called "new authoritarianism." The future of the new authoritarianism remains uncertain, as this book reveals. 9783847422211 3847422219 220 BOOK http://books.google.com/books/content?id=sBQUuAEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&source=gbs_api http://books.google.com/books/content?id=sBQUuAEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=1&source=gbs_api en 9783847422211
