Among a variety of legends, one tale describes how chickens, when caught in the confusion of the combination of rain and sun, are struck still, and while the humans are sheltering inside, the foxes prey on the vulnerable birds and conduct their highly mystical wedding ceremonies. Dire penalties apply to those who dare disturb the sanctity of the wedding ... These poems form a loose narrative, inspired by elements of Japanese legends involving foxfires, festivals, and a wedding. There is a dark edge to the light of the foxes' love, as the sun pierces a black, thunderous sky. Love, as described here, has the fire and changeability of adolescence, and captures the casualties of the pursuit of love."
