Pietro, a shy teenager, inadvertently discovers that the mayor of Borgo Alamo's son -Tommaso Pastore, nicknamed the Ox - is having relations with another boy from the village. The Ox, fearing that the story will leak out, drowns Pietro and buys his lover's silence. The mayor, in order to save Tommaso, looks for a scapegoat to keep his son out of prison, so he contacts Landi - the alcoholic father of a boy who was maimed in an accident - offering him an enticing compensation in place of his son's freedom. Things go wrong, and the Ox must serve his time in prison. Only many years later, having been released from jail, will the Ox try to redeem himself when he meets Chiara, the daughter of another Borgo Alamo "outsider." Unrecognized and abandoned by her father and forced to live with her drug-addicted mother, Chiara decides to run away, knowing full well that her mother's debts with the Albanian underworld will have to be paid, one way or another. In the unlikely and shaky bond that is forged between the two, we glimpse their only chance for redemption for these two characters, who will discover how expensive certain debts are to pay off.
