The BELOW THE SURFACE series takes place in Alaska in the years 2314-2315, two hundred years after an apocalyptic world war destroyed most of the planet below the extreme north and south latitudes. Survivors of the war, (some of whom were the descendants of First Nation people) disappeared into the wilderness where they lived peacefully until the Outsiders, small groups of survivors from the south, came to steal their land. Many Native groups were eventually forced into hiding to escape capture and death. THE ESCAPE, book one of the series, is narrated by Alec, a young doctor in the oppressive, totalitarian city of New Anchorage who is about to be executed for the murder of a scientist. His friend, Jack Correll, a young physicist, helps him to escape from prison, and together they find the secret system of subterranean caves and tunnels that was once a governmental research base. For the past thirty-seven years, it has been used as the hideout for a group of Natives whose lives are complicated by warring factions and the presence of an Outsider spy. Alec and Correll soon find themselves at odds, when Alec befriends an elderly doctor and her family, and begins to suspect that Correll's secret mission will lead to the death or capture of all the inhabitants of the underworld.
