The last two verses of chapter 9 of the Quran (9:128-129) were a topic of discussion among Muslims scholars more than a millennium ago, and they have become so again because of the controversial works of Rashad Khalifa and Edip Yuksel. Both Khalifa and Yuksel claim that these verses are not part of the original revelation of the Quran. Khalifa omitted them from his 1990 translation, and Yuksel includes them in italics and without numbering, and adds a footnote that says they are not part of the original revelation. Yuksel and Khalifa support their claims primarily with evidence of a 19-based numerical structure in the original Arabic, but they also cite Muslim history as secondary support for their claims. This essay examines that history.
