How often do you understand God's ways? How often do you project what God would do but God does exactly the opposite? How often do you think of the miracles recorded in the Bible and you seem not to find logical reasoning behind it? Just imagine the plausibility of sacrificing Isaac. Why would anyone want you to sacrifice the only son you have when he could have asked for a lamb, a buffalo, a bison, or even an elephant? Perhaps God wanted to test your faith as He did with Abraham. Perhaps God wanted to know if you can let go of your choicest prize for Him. I mean if you can't give me what you value so much, why should I bother reciprocating in the same faith?Let's imagine how Abraham felt laying down his Isaac. He was supposed to lead his son to the slaughter, blindfold his son, bound his hands, set up a pyre of wood, lay his son on this pyre, slit his throat and watch his blood flow on the altar, light a match to his body and watch the smoke rise to the heavens. How easy could that be for a father to do? A father who waited 99 years of his life to birth a son; a father who had promises of heralding many nations. This was the reality of Abraham and he didn't disobey God, he was ready to carry out this sacrifice as his obligation to his God.This act of love and unreserved obedience to God by Abraham foreshadows the love and devotion of God to mankind who granted us redemption and salvation through Jesus Christ. Now, does this demand of God to Abraham make some sense? Lives have been saved from damnation from the sacrifice of Christ Jesus which stems from this sacrifice of Abraham. You can imagine how many people Abraham can now call his children as a result of this same sacrifice. What didn't make sense to a mortal mind in the beginning now is the bedrock of our salvation and the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. Remember, God never breaks His promises. You can simply count on God's words to you.Abraham's sacrifice foreshadows the sacrifice of God through Jesus Christ, also informs us of the limitless powers of God to transform our lives if we are ready to give up our idols and do His bidding. Are we ready to lay down our affections, proclivities, mundane priorities, earthly possessions, and treasures to do God's will? How marvelous will it be to let go of that two hundred thousand dollar condo in Beverly Hills to embark on evangelism in South America or East Asia? How lovely would it be to sacrifice the buzzing sizzling nightlife of Amsterdam for an evangelism tour of Africa? Would you rather go for a Beyonce concert or fellowship with fellow brethren at the local assembly? Can you let that sushi pass you by for a day while you fast for a brother who needs a spiritual intervention? Will you empty your savings to help the church feed the needy, help the poor or propagate the gospel of salvation? How many of us can let go of those things we cherish the most; our secular choices that are dear to us; worldly relationships that we cherish more than life itself? These are the choices God wants us to make. Choose between our love for Him and our love for the world. Our love for God and His commands should reign supreme in our hearts but oftentimes we forget who we are - sons and daughters of God - and thus, we should cherish our personal relationship with our Father in heaven more than anything else.
