"New Method, New Poetry" is an introduction for English-speaking readers to the poetry of the Uzbek Jadids, a Muslim reform movement of the early twentieth century that was suppressed by the Soviets. Their reform programme included poetry itself, introducing new, more topical subjects, as well as new verse forms, and using modern Uzbek instead of the old Turkic language of classical poetry. The translations are by the English poet Andrew Staniland and Uzbek co-translators A'zam Obid and Avazkhon Khaydarov. They include Andrew and Avazkhon's translations of the Cho'lpon poems in "12 Ghazals By Alisher Navoiy, 14 Poems By Abdulhamid Cho'lpon", along with new translations of four more of his poems and poems by fellow Jadids Nozimaxonim, Munavvar Qori Abdurashidxonov, Abdulla Avloniy, To'lagan Xo'jamyorov, Abdurauf Fitrat, Hamza Hakimzoda Niyoziy, Abdulla Qodiriy and Usmon Nosir. Together they represent an independent Uzbek tradition of liberalism and modernity.
