Marshall Thompson is a writer who really knows how to tell a story, and what a story he has to tell in Hayti Police. Having joined the Police Department in Durham, North Carolina in 1968, as one of its first Black officers, he was told by veteran officers that he was too small, too easy going, and too polite to last, but they didn't know what he was made into by a life of hard work. He would outlast almost all of his fellow recruits. This story is told against a backdrop of racial discrimination, with the name Hayti taken from one of the black neighborhoods in Durham, and offers a firsthand account of such discrimination in the South. MARSHALL THOMPSON is a native and lifelong resident of Durham, North Carolina. He is a graduate of Hillside High School, Durham Technical Institute, and North Carolina Central University. He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years, and was on the Durham Police Department for nearly twenty years.
