Story of My Grandfather: An Immigrant

With this little booklet, I would like to illustrate the journey that led me to closely explore the history of my grandfather, whom I unfortunately never had the chance to meet in person, as he passed away at a young age. It all started when I found his passport among the family papers. Curious about the stamps from various countries in the passport, I noticed that most of them were from France and Switzerland. This detail raised many questions for me, prompting me to want to learn more about his travels and his life abroad. I decided to contact the French and Swiss archives, sending emails in which I explained that I was a twelve-year-old boy interested in learning about my grandfather's history for genealogical reasons. To my great surprise, I received several responses, from which I was able to gather valuable information. Here, I am attaching all the documents I received and showed to my mother and uncles. With surprise and emotion, they were able to read and learn something new about their father. From these documents, all of my grandfather's return trips to Italy became clear, many of which coincided with the births of his children. Additionally, I discovered where he worked and the fact that he sent part of his earnings to his mother and family. Everything made sense to me when, in school this year, we studied migrations and, in particular, remittances. I continued my research and also discovered how Italians used to find work abroad: through ads or by word of mouth from acquaintances who were already living abroad.
