Just before the outbreak of the War Between the States, Buck Jernigan, his wife Betty Gail, their twins, Norman and Mia, and their two free Negroes, Isaac and Sally, live happily in the small hamlet of Stone Mountain, Georgia.Unknown to Betty Gail and Sally, Buck and Isaac become stealth abolitionists, freeing nearly fifty area slaves. They become deeply committed to the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th century enslaved people of African descent in the United States in efforts to escape to free states and Canada. Buck and Isaac meet with Harriett Tubman and William Still, leaders of the Underground Railroad.
